Unreal Engine 4 will bring us beautiful games faster than ever

A select group of people got a private demo of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 at the Game Developers Conference in March, and Stu Horvath of Ars Technica’s sister publication Wired was one of the lucky few. UE4 has many new features that will let it continue to sit on the Throne of Games (Engines), though Wired hints that old console hardware may hinder its crack at progress.

The most recently released version of Epic Games’ engine, Unreal Engine 3, powered the game Gears of War released in 2006. Since then, it’s been an unstoppable force behind over 150 games, including the Mass Effect trilogy, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mirror’s Edge, and Borderlands.

One of the distinct properties of UE4 is its ability to create and display effects based on the inherent properties of an environment, rather than displaying pre-programmed ones based on anticipated scenarios. For example, light that travels through water would refract, and a character that stands in a mirror would see a reflection of themselves, not a pre-programmed image or pre-rendered character standing on the other side. This natural behavior presumably creates much less work for developers—rather than having to explicitly teach everything how to react to every individual stimulus, objects have inherent behaviors and know what to do.

Ash particles drift through a scene rendered with Unreal Engine 4.

Another one of UE4′s desirable new features is its particle effects, or the ability to render hordes of tiny objects and all of their erratic motions. In the demo shown at GDC, onlookers saw the engine’s ability to render many pieces of ash floating in the air, and dust particles floating in the light of a flashlight in a dark room. Normally, having to render the odd and easily affected paths of particles brings processors to their knees, but with UE4 running on an NVIDIA Kepler GTX 680, they drifted without effort.

NEW Tekken Tag 2 Arts: Extra Console Characters Revealed?!

Playable in TTT2 Console? She’d better be.

WHOA! Looks like Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is starting to make some waves online again. Just recently, the above render of TTT2′s gorgeous goo-covered final boss, Unknown, appeared online. But heck, that she’d be playable and in the console version of Tekken Tag 2 is kinda expected. Well, Harada has been saying for a while now that the home version of TTT2 will have a LOT more fighters- more than 50, and here’s what looks like the first solid looks at perhaps some of these newcomers. The images below have supposedly been leaked online originally from Gamespot (they’ve since been taken down), showing pretty legit-looking (and downright awesome) renders of long-time MIA Tekken characters Kunimitsu, Ogre and Angel. Are these indeed our first look at TTT2′s console challengers? If so… FREAKIN’ AWESOME. You can find larger versions of these character arts over at Shoryuken.

Shrek’s back! Now players can finally have their Ogre/True Ogre tag team. Yikes!

The Manji renegade is back and looking even hotter than ever.

Elysium- er, Angel is back and looking fine. Hoping she’s not just a Mishima clone this time around.

We’ll need to hear actual confirmation from Harada, which should be forthcoming… perhaps we’ll see these returning faces in action during next months’ E3? I really hope these guys all have unique fighting styles. My, oh my… June is turning out to be quite an exciting month. More as we get it then!

You may have noticed a shiny new name floating around our bylines today, true believers, and no, you are not suffering from amnesia nor are you the subject of a cruel life/reality simulation program. That name you see, “Mike Suszek,” belongs to none other than our brand new, pine-fresh Weekend Editor, Mike Suszek.

This means that you’ll be seeing a lot less of Jess Conditt and myself during the next couple of weekends as Mike settles into his new position, with the eventual goal being for Mike to take over the weekends entirely before too long.

Yes, that includes the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, but we’ve still got at least one more weekend together, my darling readers. Come, let us cherish our remaining time together by reading these webcomics from last week, and voting for our favorites after the break.

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 troubled?

Posted by admin | Posted in Nintendo 3DS | Posted on 19-05-2012-05-2008

There may be something funky going on with Brothers in Arms: Furious 4. After its announcement at last year’s E3, neither publisher Ubisoft or developer Gearbox have said a peep about it. That’s odd for a game supposedly scheduled for 2012.

Making things even stranger and raising questions is Ubisoft abandoning the trademark for the WWII shooter. When quizzed over the move, a rep for the company told Kotaku: “We don’t have anything to share at this point in time.”

This could mean anything really though; maybe there’s been a name change?

In any case, all we’ve seen from the game is the pre-rendered trailer below and the handful of screenshots seen here. Fingers crossed for a more clarifying statement arriving in the not-too-distant future, as Furious 4 was at the very least an interesting take on WWII games, if perhaps an inappropriate one for the Brothers in Arms franchise.

Here’s How To Make The Professor Layton Soundtrack Much Better [Video]

Click here to read Here's How To Make The <em>Professor Layton</em> Soundtrack Much Better

The Professor Layton games have long demanded a soundtrack a bit more sophisticated than the one they have—the plinky, “ooh boy, we have a mystery!” music is fine at first, but eventually I’ve found that it begins to grate. This is especially true of the first game that I played in the series, 2008′s Professor Layton and the Curios Village. More »
